Robert Liu Earns Second SCIAC Athlete of the Week Award for CMS Men's Tennis

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Robert Liu of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team was named the SCIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for matches through Sunday, March 20, the league office announced today.

Liu earns the honor for the second time this season, after previously taking it on Feb. 14 after a pair of home wins over Westcliff and Hope International. It is also the third award for the Stags, with Matthew Robinson also capturing it on March 1 after going 6-0 at the ITA Indoor Nationals.

This week, Liu was 5-0 at No. 1 singles as CMS had a big week, knocking off four top-20 teams, including two top-10 squads in its final two matches of the Stag-Hen Invitational. In a 5-4 comeback win over No. 3 WashU on Friday, Liu broke a 3-3 tie with a key 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win to give CMS its first lead after it fell behind 3-0 after doubles.

In a championship win over No. 8 Trinity on Saturday, he prevailed 11-9 in a second-set tiebreaker to sweep Cameron Krimball, who is ranked No. 7 nationally, 6-3, 7-6 and give CMS its fourth point in another tight win. With his own victory, he improved to 11-1 in singles in dual matches this season, with the only loss coming to USC, a top-10 Division I program in his first dual.

Liu and the Stags will be back in action on Friday and Saturday for three big home matches, taking on Middlebury on Friday (5 p.m.) and Williams and George Fox on Saturday (2 p.m., 6 p.m.).
