Nikolai Parodi, Ian Freer Earn ITA West Region Awards

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Nikolai Parodi was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region Senior of the Year, and first-year Ian Freer captured the West Region Rookie of the Year, the organization announced this morning.

As one of the four regional winners from around the country, Parodi and Freer are now one of four finalists for the ITA national awards, which will be announced next week during its virtual awards show.

Parodi finished his senior season as the No. 1 ranked singles player in the nation in all of Division III. He moved up to the No. 1 spot after winning all three of his singles matches at the ITA Indoor Nationals, including a dominant win against Emory in the championship match. He finished ranked in the top five all four seasons, including a No. 2 ranking as a first-year player, when he reached the NCAA Division III Championship match in singles. He was an eight-time All-American, becoming only the third Stag to win All-America honors in both singles and doubles all four years.

Freer joined Parodi on a doubles team that finished the year ranked No. 3 in the nation, earning him his first All-America distinction of his career. He also ended the fall ranked No. 26 in the nation in singles (No. 9 in the West Region) and played mostly in the No. 4 position for a stacked Stags lineup in the spring, ending the year with a 10-3 record in singles and 12-4 in doubles. He reached the semifinals of the ITA West Regionals in the fall, before falling to teammate Jack Katzman in three sets, and picked up spring wins over Hawaii Pacific and Trinity on CMS' opening trip to Hawaii.

CMS finished the shortened 2019-20 season with a 14-1 record in dual matches and a No. 2 national ranking, as the Stags were expecting to contend for the national championship, which would have been held today in Saint Louis before the suspension of spring sports.
