Stags Take Two in Saturday Biz Blitz

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 2-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team used twelve different players to defeat NAIA opponents Hope International University and Ottawa University Arizona on Saturday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Five Stag seniors accounted for both singles and doubles wins, as CMS defeated HIU 6-1, and OUAZ 7-0.

Against HIU, the Stags earned the doubles point by winning at all three positions. Seniors Daniel Park and Jake Berber converted a key deuce break point at 4-all, which the CMS No. 2 pair then consolidated for a 6-4 win to complete the doubles sweep. In singles, first year Ian Habbestad at No. 6, and sophomore Ethan Carroll at No. 5 yielded only one game between them, as CMS surged to an early 3-0 lead. First year Ian Freer then earned the clinch at No. 2, leading 6-4, 3-0, when his opponent retired with a low back injury. Park at No. 4, and senior Nikolai Parodi at No. 1, completed the Stags' scoring. Parodi needed to come back from a 6-2, 2-0 deficit, winning twelve of the final fifteen games of the match.

Using three new doubles teams against OUAZ, the Stags won by 6-1 scores at all three positions to take a 1-0 lead. The singles was similarly lopsided, with no Stag losing more than five games in any match. A trio of seniors in the bottom half of the singles put the dual out of reach. Berber's clean slate at No. 6 gave CMS a 2-0 advantage, while Jake Williams and Matthew Jacobs added the Stags' fourth and fifth points. First year Michael Hao won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, while sophomore Nic Meister at No. 1 and junior Robert Liu at No. 2 completed the shutout.

CMS is now 5-0 and returns to the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Saturday, February 15 for a doubleheader against Division II opponent Concordia-Irvine and NAIA opponent San Diego Christian. Matches will begin at 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM respectively.
