CMS Men's Tennis Picks up Road Win over Division II Hawaii Pacific
HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned its first program win over host Hawaii Pacific on Friday afternoon at the Central Oahu Tennis Center. CMS capitalized on a dramatic tie-break win at No. 2 doubles to earn the doubles point, and followed with three straight set singles wins to defeat No. 9 HPU. With the win, CMS is now 2-0, having knocked off Pacific (Ore.) 8-1 yesterday. The Stags will conclude the playing portion of their Hawaii trip by taking on No. 13 Trinity University at 4:00 PM on Saturday.
Juniors Jack Katzman and Robert Liu clinched the doubles point for CMS, coming back from a 5-6 deficit to earn a tie-break win at No. 2. Seniors Jake Berber and Daniel Park got the Stags' other doubles win at No. 3, coming back from 1-3 down to win five of the last six games of the match.
The singles was closely contested, but the Stags never relinquished the lead they established after the doubles. The Sharks evened the match at 1-all with a straight set victory at No. 6 singles, before Katzman put CMS back on top with his win at No. 2. Katzman's opponent retired due to injury just two points before elimination. With CMS up 2-1, HPU again leveled the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Nic Meister earned his second decisive victory in as many days with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles to put the Stags on top for good.,With CMS leading 3-2, first year Ian Freer brought his team to match point at 6-3, 5-4 deuce, just as Liu had taken the second set at the fifth singles position. Although Freer didn't convert his first match point, he secured the clinch on his second match point, giving him a 6-3, 7-6(5) win at No. 4 singles, and CMS its first win over HPU in three tries since 2010.
