CMS Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season with 8-1 Win over Pacific

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team, which enters the spring season ranked No. 2 in the nation in Division III, opened up its dual match schedule with an 8-1 win over Pacific (Ore.) on Thursday afternoon at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Stags used 12 different players in its six doubles and six singles positions to win its 2020 season opener. The three doubles teams (Nikolai Parodi and Ian Freer at No. 1, Jack Katzman and Robert Liu at No. 2 and Jake Williams and Daniel Park at No. 3) each won by identical 8-3 scores to give CMS control of the match heading into singles. Senior Jake Berber put the Stags up 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, and sophomore Nic Meister (6-3, 6-1), junior Casey Morris (6-1, 6-1) and sophomore Ethan Carroll (6-3, 6-2) followed with quick wins in the No. 1-3 spots, respectively. First-year Ian Habbestad (6-2, 6-1) earned the final point for the Stags at No. 4 for his first career singles dual win. 

Thursday's match against Pacific was the first dual against the Boxers since March 25, 2014, when the Stags won a 9-0 home contest. CMS will face Division II Hawaii-Pacific University on Thursday at Central Oahu Regional Park. HPU is ranked No. 9 in Division II and are unbeaten in two dual matches against the Stags - a 6-3 decision in 2010 in Claremont, and a 7-2 win in Honolulu on CMS' last trip to Hawaii in 2013. Tomorrow's match will be played using Division II rules, a 7-point match format using no-ad scoring and playing service lets.
