
Stags Slated to Begin National Championships at Home

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team is making their ninth-straight trip to the National Quarterfinals after defeating No. 15 Trinity (TX) 5-1 at the NCAA Regional Tournament last weekend. The Stags don't have to travel far, as this year's National Championships are hosted by CMS at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The final eight teams standing include the top-five ranked teams in the country, as well as three more ranked in the top-20.
The No. 5 Stags open the tournament with No. 7 Chicago on Monday at 9 a.m. CMS squared off with the Maroon in the 2017 regular season and came away with a 7-2 win.
The winner of the match will move on to face the winner of No. 3 Bowdoin and No. 10 Washington-St. Louis on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

100 Words on the Stags: The Stags arrive in the NCAA Championships with a 30-3 record overall and winners of the SCIAC. CMS played one of the toughest and busiest schedules in the country this season with 15 matches against teams that ended the regular season ranked in the top-25 Nationally. In those top-25 ranked matches, CMS went 11-3 with two of their three losses coming in 5-4 decisions (vs. Emory, Mar. 12, 2018, vs. Williams, Mar. 27, 2018). Of the teams still standing, the Stags went 2-3 including an 8-1 win over No. 1 Middlebury on Mar. 31. CMS is led by a tremendous group of underclassmen that features Nikolai Parodi, Jack Katzman, and Oscar Burney who anchor the top three singles spots for CMS. In doubles play Parodi has paired with junior captain Julian Gordy and the duo holds a 20-6 record on the top court. |

No. 1 Middlebury advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 15th time in the last 16 years after defeating Johns Hopkins 5-1. They come into the National Championships with a 22-4 record overall and a 7-1 mark in the NESCAC, a conference featuring two other teams ranked in the top-four in the nation. One of the Panthers' four losses this season came when they fell to Bowdoin 5-3 in the NESCAC Conference Championship. Middlebury opens the Quarterfinals with No. 20 Whitman on Monday at noon, with the winner moving on to face to the winner of No. 4 Williams and No. 2 Emory on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Panthers are led by All-NESCAC selections Lubomir Cuba and Kyle Schlanger. The Eagles have made it to this stage in 27 of the last 29 years. They come into the tournament with an 18-4 record but fell to No. 7 Chicago 7-2 in the UAA Conference Championships. Emory earned the bid to Claremont after defeating North Carolina Wesleyan 5-0 and will open the Championships against No. 4 Williams on Monday at noon, with the winning team moving on to face the winner of No. 1 Middlebury and No. 20 Whitman. The Eagles are led by Jonathan Jemison and Hayden Cassone. Jemison has manufactured an overall mark of 17-10 this year, which includes a title at the ITA South Region Championships. With the victory, Bowdoin tied the school record for single-season wins (21). They come into the week with a 21-1 record, 8-1 in NESCAC, with their lone loss coming to top-seeded Middlebury (8-1). The Polar Bears avenged their regular season loss with a 5-3 victory over Middlebury in the NESCAC Conference Championship. Bowdoin will face No. 10 Washington-St. Louis in the Quarterfinal on Monday at 9 a.m. The winner will advance to face the winner of No. 5 CMS and No. 7 Chicago on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Polar Bears are led by all-conference selections Luke Tercek and Grant Urken. They come in with a record of 15-4 overall and 6-1 in the highly competitive NESCAC. The Ephs defeated rival No. 8 Amherst to to earn their bid into the NCAA Quarterfinals, coming from behind after dropping two of three doubles matches. The 2016 National Champion, Williams Ephs, take on the defending National Champions, No. 2 Emory, on Monday at noon. 100 Words on the Maroon: Making their sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the No. 7 Chicago Maroon earned victories over Augustana College and No. 9 Carnegie Mellon to move into the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third time in program history in their sixth overall appearance in the Tournament. Chicago comes in with a 18-4 overall record, 3-0 in UAA play. The Maroon defeated No. 2 Emory in the UAA Conference Championship to win their first UAA Title in program history, and had seven players earn all-conference nods including UAA Rookie of the Year Jeremy Yuan.
