Stags miss opportunities, but hit the mark in 6-3 win over No. 13 Williams

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team won its ninth match against a nationally ranked opponent, defeating No. 13 Williams 6-3 on Tuesday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Freshman Nikolai Parodi (CMC) led CMS with wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 1 singles.

The Stags had chances to earn their third straight doubles sweep, only one game from victories on all three courts against the Ephs. CMS led 7-4 at No. 1, 7-6 at No. 2, and 7-4 at No. 3, but only Parodi and Jay Yeam (CMC) on Court 3 could close out. Senior captain Glenn Hull (CMC) and Daniel Park (CMC) returned at 6-7 and then again at 7-8, but came up just short, losing 7 points to 4 in the tie-break. At No. 1, senior captain Daniel Morkovine (CMC) and Julian Gordy (CMC) led 6-2 and 7-4, but could not convert on multiple match point opportunities in the twelfth game, and then failed to win another game in a 9-7 loss.

Despite trailing after doubles for the eighth time against nine nationally ranked opponents, CMS once again responded with dominant singles play to put the match away. Hull won his tenth straight dual match, remaining perfect this spring, with a straight-set victory at No. 2 to pull the Stags even at 2-all. Williams re-took the lead with a win at No. 3, before CMS won the last four matches on court, all in straight sets. Parodi got the clincher at No. 1 for his sixth straight win at that position.

After 15 matches at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, CMS will embark on its first road trip of the season later this week. The Stags travel to Texas to face No. 16 Trinity University (9-5) on Friday, March 31 at 3 p.m. CST in San Antonio. On Saturday, CMS will take on No. 4 Middlebury (8-1) at 1 p.m. CST at the Austin Tennis Academy. The Stags conclude their road trip with a match against No. 1 Emory (8-3) on Sunday at 10 a.m. CST, also at the Austin Tennis Academy.
