Stags Capture Fourth Tournament Title With Win Over #2 Emory

CMS Men's Tennis won its fourth Stag-Hen Invitational title in six years, as the Stags completed a dominating weekend of tennis with an 8-1 victory over #2 Emory on Saturday. CMS lost only one point en route to the championship, defeating #12 Case Western Reserve and #1 Kenyon by 9-0 scores on Friday, and then #2 Emory by an 8-1 margin on Saturday.

CMS' title run was marked by aggressive, well executed doubles play from all three of the Stags' doubles pairs. The Stags swept the doubles in each of their tournament matches, and extended their streak of doubles sweeps to six, all against ranked Division III opponents. Sophomores Warren Wood (Del Mar, CA) and Joe Dorn (Washington D.C.) faced their most difficult challenge at the top doubles position this spring, but won their fifteenth match together to complete the doubles sweep against Emory. Wood and Dorn were down 5-1 and two service breaks, but then won eight of the next ten games to earn their 8th straight victory against D3 competition.

Wood and Dorn returned in singles to provide the match and tournament clinching victories at the #1 and #2 positions respectively. Wood's 6-3, 6-2 win over Ian Halpern put CMS up 4-0 in less than an hour, and then Dorn clinched with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win on Court 2. Senior Alex Lane (Claremont, CA) got his third singles victory of the tournament with a hard fought 5-7, 6-3, (10-6) win at #4. Lane has now gone three sets or a deciding match tie-break in five of his last six matches. Freshman Skyler Butts (Santa Ana, CA) who has had an incrementally easier path this spring, won a tough two-setter at #5 for his seventh victory, keeping his singles record unblemished. Senior Mac Cahill (Southport, CT) also won his third match of the tournament, earning the Stags' seventh point of the match with a 10-6 match tie-break win at #6.

The title match was the fourth in the tournament's history featuring CMS and Emory. The Stags won the inaugural title in 2007 with a thrilling 5-4 win over Emory. The Eagles defeated CMS 7-2 for the 2011 title. In 2012 both teams were declared co-champions when rain forced cancellation of the title match.

CMS is now 9-1 overall and travels to Hawaii to face three Division II opponents and Division III Whitman College. The Stags open SCIAC play at home on Saturday, March 23 against Occidental.
