CMS Sweeps Caltech and Bates

CMS Sweeps Caltech and Bates

Junior Mac Cahill (Southport, CT [pictured right]) had victories at #1 singles against Caltech and #6 singles against Bates to lead the Stags to a pair of wins on Saturday. CMS surrendered only seven total games in a 9-0 win over Caltech in the morning, before stopping #26 Bates by a 7-2 margin in the afternoon.

In their SCIAC opening contest against Caltech, CMS was dominant at every position. Sophomore Neel Kotrappa (La Verne, CA) kept his perfect spring singles and doubles records intact by recording wins at #1 doubles with Cahill, and then later at #2 singles to clinch the dual match. Kotrappa has now clinched three of the Stags four wins thus far.

The afternoon dual against #26 Bates proved to be a formidable one for CMS, as the Stags found themselves trailing early in two of the three doubles matches. Down 2-6 at #1 and #2 doubles, but up two breaks at #3, it looked as if the Stags would face an uphill battle going into the singles. Numbers two and three doubles went as expected, with Bates winning 8-2 at #2 and CMS winning 8-3 at #3. That put CMS' #1 pair Alex Lane (Jr. - Claremont, CA) and Warren Wood (Fr. - Del Mar, CA) in the position of breaking the tie. Breaking back twice from 2-6 down, Lane and Wood brought themselves back to 6-all before holding easily and then converting on their first match point and third consecutive break.

In the singles, CMS won in straight sets at all but the #1 and #3 positions. Nik Marino (Fr. - San Diego, CA) dropped only one game for the second straight match at #5, while Cahill got a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 match clinching victory at #6. Junior Alex Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA) earned his first singles win of the spring with his 6-0, 4-6, (10-7) win at #3.

With two victories on Saturday, CMS moves to 4-1 on the season and will travel to San Diego on Thursday to take on NAIA's 7th ranked Point Loma Nazarene. The Stags will also compete in the prestigious 123rd Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships, Thursday through Sunday.
