Stags Drop Close One to Westmont; Easily Defeat Chapman
Westmont College - ranked 21st in NAIA - narrowly edged the Stags in the first half of a Saturday double header by a 5-4 margin. It was the second match against a nationally ranked small college program in as many weeks for the Stags. CMS then came back to defeat Division III regional opponent Chapman University 9-0 in a late afternoon match.
The doubles matches against Westmont were all tightly contested, with CMS' teams looking more cohesive than a week ago against Hawaii Pacific. Once again though, doubles was the difference in the final score, as the Stags managed to win at #2, while dropping two close pro-sets at #1 and #3. After trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Stags split the singles - winning at #1 (Robbie Erani, SO - New York, NY), #2 (Mikey Lim, SR - Honolulu, HI), and #6 (Eric MacColl, SR - Greebrae, CA).
In the afternoon match against Chapman, CMS was dominant at #1 and #2 doubles, winning 8-1 and 8-2 respectively. MacColl and Brandon Wei (SO - Lake Oswego, OR) were particularly impressive as a first time pair at the number two position. In the singles, the Stags got consistently strong performances from all six starters, with none dropping more than five games. MacColl completed a perfect weekend by winning at #1 singles, his fourth victory in twenty-four hours.
The Stags are off until next Saturday, February 27, when they go to Occidental at 9:30 AM, and then return to the Biszantz Family Tennis Center for a 3:30 contest against Division II opponent Cal Poly Pomona. CMS is now 3-2 overall on the season.
