Bates’ Stein Surprises Field to Reach NCAA Singles Final

Bates’ Ben Stein and Emory’s Michael Goodwin advanced to the final of the NCAA Division III Singles Championship at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday. The unseeded Stein, defeated David Maldow of John’s Hopkins in the quarterfinals in three sets, and then top-seeded and undefeated John Kauss of Gustavus Adolphus in straight sets in the semifinals. Goodwin, won a pair of three-set matches against second seeded Lawrence Wang of CMS in the quarters, and then against seventh seeded Conrad Olson of Middlebury in the semis. All four semifinalists competing on Saturday were seniors.

Stein also advanced to the semifinals of the doubles draw for the second consecutive year with partner Amrit Ruspasinghe. They will face Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland of Washington University St. Louis for a place in the final. Stein is the only player still involved in both the singles and the doubles draws.

Final matches on Sunday begin at 12 Noon with the singles final featuring Stein and Goodwin. The doubles semis will follow not before 2:00 PM, and the doubles final will follow that after the players have had suitable rest.
