Mens Tennis Stays Undefeated in SCIAC
CMS Stags Tennis extended their conference winning streak to twenty-five matches with an 8-1 win at Whittier on Saturday. Leading the Stags was freshman Russell Brockett (Austin, TX - pictured), who earned one-sided victories at #1 doubles and #2 singles. CMS stands atop the SCIAC standings with a 4-0 record.
CMS' 3-0 lead after doubles was ignited by number three pair Myles Crandall (So -Tucson, AZ) and Mathias Mondino (So - Westport, CT), who ran off five straight games and an 8-3 win. They were closely followed by Ryan Berber (Jr - Austin, TX) and Thomas Keiffer (So - La Jolla, CA) at number two, who rallied from 5-6, love-30 down to gain an 8-6 victory. Next, Brockett and Ben Wiener (Jr - Houston, TX) made it a doubles sweep with their win at number one. In singles, the Stags were paced by Brockett, who won his fifth straight dual match in which he has given up two or fewer total games. Brockett is 7-1 in singles on the year. Crandall also won at #3, his third singles win in eight days.
Under threatening afternoon skies, the Stags took on 18th ranked Washington & Lee in the second half of their Saturday double-header. All three doubles matches were completed with the Stags holding a 2-1 lead before rain forced play to be abandoned. Stags #1 team Guillaume Schils (Jr - Shaker Heights, OH) and Lawrence Wang (Jr - Orange, CA) earned their fourth win on the season and 56th of their career, putting them ten (10) shy of the CMS all-time mark for career victories by a doubles team. Senior captain Ben Hough (Spokane, WA) and partner Eric MacColl (So - Greenbrae, CA) won their sixth straight at #2 doubles. Hough is now 13-2 in doubles on the year, having partnered Wang in the fall and MacColl this spring.
The Stags resume dual match play on Wednesday, March 5th against 12th ranked University of Mary Washington and Wabash College. CMS is 7-3 overall and 4-0 in conference.
