Mens Tennis Advances in Stag-Hen
CMS Stags Tennis advanced to the semi-finals of the Stag-Hen Invitational with a 7-2 victory over UT-Tyler on Friday. The Stags were paced by two wins by sophomore Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI - pictured), who won at #3 doubles and #1 singles. Earlier in the day, the Stags were 9-0 winners over Lake Forest.
In the Stag-Hen opener, CMS were matched against a determined UT-Tyler team that had lost its #1 player to the flu earlier in the day. With their second and third doubles teams moving up a position, Tyler proved they could match up with the Stags. CMS got the 1-0 advantage when Lim and partner Ronald Wu (Fr. - Los Altos, CA) won at #3 doubles. However the Stags lost at #1 doubles to even the match, before senior captain Ben Hough (Spokane, WA) and Eric MacColl (So - Greenbrae, CA) won their eighth consecutive match at #2 doubles to put CMS up 2-1. In the singles, the Stags took command of the match by winning four first sets 6-0. Lim was the first Stag to notch a singles win, with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #1.CMS went on to win five of six singles, dropping a match tie-break at #2 singles.
The Stags - now 11-3 overall - advance to the semifinals against 12th ranked Kenyon, a 7-2 winner against 16th ranked Whitman. In the other semifinal, 11th ranked Bowdoin will face 7th ranked Trinity (TX). Both matches will begin at 8:30 AM on Saturday, with the championship and 3rd/4th matches scheduled for 2:00 PM. In the play-back matches, UT-Tyler will play Whitman, and The College of New Jersey will play Pomona-Pitzer.
Earlier in the day against Lake Forest, CMS swept the doubles behind the play of #2 team Ben Wiener (Jr. - Houston, TX) and Russell Brockett (Fr. - Austin, TX), who were 8-1 winners. In the singles, the Stags were dominant at positions three through six, losing only seven games. The match also marked the successful return to action of Spencer MacColl (So. - Greenbrae, CA), who was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at #6 singles.
