Stags take 3rd at Invitational

Stags take 3rd at Invitational

CMS Stags Tennis took third place in Stag-Hen Invitational after losing a 5-4 semifinal match to 12th ranked Kenyon and then defeating 11th ranked Bowdoin 5-2 in the rain-shortened third / fourth play-off. Trinity University and Kenyon were declared co-champs of the tournament when rain forced the two teams to abandon the match with Trinity leading 4-2 in matches.

The Stags' Ronald Wu (Fr. - Los Altos, CA) finished the weekend with a perfect 5-0 combined record at #6 singles and #3 doubles. Against Kenyon, the Stags found themselves down 2-1 after the doubles, when only Wu and Mikey Lim (So. - Honolulu, HI) were the able to get a victory at the #3 position. In the singles, CMS got the match even at 2-2 with Eric MacColl's (So - Greenbrae, CA) easy straight set win at #4. After dropping #3 singles to go down 3-2, the Stags again got even with Wu's win at #6. With the match tied at three, and Lim, Lawrence Wang (Jr. - Orange, CA) and senior captain Ben Hough (Spokane, WA) on court at #1, #2, and #5, the outcome looked promising for CMS. A one-sided loss at #1 followed by a one-sided win at #2 put the Stags at 4-all. Hough rallied from a set down to win the second, but was broken at 3-4, and lost a one-break 6-3 decisive third set.

In the 3rd / 4th play-off against Bowdoin, the Stags earned a 2-1 advantage after doubles with Guillaume Schils (Jr. - Shaker Heights, OH) and Wang winning at #1 and Lim and Wu at #3. Mike Starr (So. - San Ramon, CA) was a comfortable two set winner at #3, while Wang and Ben Wiener (Jr. - Houston, TX) won hard fought matches at #2 and #6 respectively to seal the victory for the Stags. MacColl and Drew Sabater (Jr. - Claremont, CA) were each up a set at #4 and #5 singles when rain stopped play.

Final standings for the Stag-Hen Invitational: Trinity and Kenyon co-champs, CMS 3rd, Bowdoin 4th, Whitman 5th, The College of New Jersey 6th, UT-Tyler 7th, and Pomona-Pitzer 8th.

CMS heads into spring break with a 12-4 record overall. The week of March 24th, CMS will play five (5) top eight teams in six days in Claremont and Texas.
