Men’s Tennis Sweeps Friday Doubleheader
CMS Stags Tennis returned to its home courts on Friday and notched a 9-0 SCIAC win against La Verne and a thrilling 5-4 win over 14th ranked NAIA opponent Concordia University. The win over La Verne was the Stags' 26th consecutive in conference.
The Stags returned to their solid doubles play on Friday by getting sweeps in both matches. Number two team Ben Hough (Sr. - Spokane, WA) and Eric MacColl (So. - Greenbrae, CA) [pictured] were decisive 8-3 and 8-2 winners, improving their record to 12-6 this spring. Against La Verne, Hough was inserted at #2 singles and earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory that clinched the dual match win for CMS. Sophomore Spencer MacColl (Greenbrae, CA) got the Stags their first singles win of the afternoon at #6.
The Stags' doubles sweep against Concordia proved to be very important, as four of the six singles matches went to three sets. With CMS needing only two singles wins to clinch the dual match, the Stags saw their 3-0 lead get erased after losing tough matches at positions one through three. Positions four through six all went to three sets, with junior Drew Sabater (Claremont, CA) putting the Stags up 4-3 with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win at #5. In the most dramatic match of the afternoon, freshman Russell Brockett (Austin, TX) found himself down a match point at 7-6, 5-2 and his opponent serving with two breaks at #6 singles. Brockett hit a forehand passing shot winner to get back to deuce in the game, and then pulled out the set in a tie-break. Due to failing light at the beginning of the third set, the match was moved from court #6 to court #2, where Brockett closed out a 6-1 win to clinch the victory for the Stags.
CMS returns SCIAC action on Saturday at Occidental. Match time is 9:30 AM at Freemont Park in Glendale. In the afternoon, the Stags return home to host Chapman University at 2:00 PM. With the pair of wins Friday, CMS moves to 16-7 on the season and 5-0 in SCIAC.
