Stags Narrowly Fall to Santa Cruz in Last of Three in NorCal
In the battle for #1 in Division III, UC Santa Cruz escaped with a 5-4 win at home against CMS, in the finale of a three match NorCal road trip against tough competition. The Stags also dropped matches to sixth-ranked NAIA opponent Fresno Pacific University 7-2, and Division I opponent UC Davis 4-3 in the lead up to the match with Santa Cruz. Weekend highlights for the Stags included the play of Lawrence Wang (SO - Orange, CA), who paired with Guillaume Schils (SO - Shaker Heights, OH) for an exciting win at #1 doubles against Santa Cruz. Wang was also impressive in his win at #1 singles against UC Davis, and in a hard fought loss to Matt Seeberger of UCSC. Senior co-captains William Ellison (Shaker Heights, OH) and Eric Chow (Sunnyvale, CA) were the only Stags to win two singles matches on the weekend, with Ellison holding a match point to win a third singles match at FPU. Closer to home in southern California, the Stags earned a 7-2 win over Div II Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday. Sophomore Drew Sabater (Claremont, CA) won matches at #3 singles and #2 doubles to lead the Stags. The Stags are now 18-6 on the season and resume SCIAC play at home this weekend against Occidental (Friday, 2 PM) and Redlands (Saturday, 9:30 AM).
