Starr, Ellison and Oehm Win ITA Regional Titles
Unseeded seventeen year-old Harvey Mudd College freshman
Mike Starr (San Ramon, CA) capped an auspicious
collegiate tennis debut by winning the Wilson / ITA West Regional
singles final 6-1, 6-4 over teammate William
Ellison (Shaker Heights, OH) on Sunday. Ellison then
partnered David Oehm (Menlo Park, CA) to win the
doubles title, giving CMS it's first ever sweep of the singles and
doubles crowns at the Wilson
/ ITA West Regionals.
Starr dropped only one set in six matches and defeated three seeded
players - including the top two seeds and teammates
Lawrence Wang and Ellison in the semis and final
respectively - en route to the title. Ellison and Oehm became the
second consecutive CMS doubles team to win the regional tournament,
defeating UC Santa Cruz freshmen Brian Pybas and Marc Vartabedian
6-2, 6-4 in the final. By winning, Starr, Ellison and Oehm advance
to the Wilson / ITA Small College National Championships in Ft.
Myers, Florida October 11-14, and earn All-American honors.
CMS had it's finest ITA Regional tournament ever, advancing nine
(9) to the round of 16, seven (7) to the quarterfinals, and three
(3) to the semifinals in singles; while advancing six (6) doubles
teams to the quarters and three (3) teams to the semis. The singles
final between Starr and Ellison was broadcast live on the internet
at radiotennis.com.
