John Laidlaw Captures SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Honors for CMS Men's Soccer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - John Laidlaw of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team earned the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week for games through Sunday, Oct. 1, the conference office announced today.

Laidlaw set up both CMS goals in a 2-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer in a Sixth Street Rivalry game on Saturday. He helped the Stags take a 1-0 lead when he headed a pass across the front of the goal to set up James Gomez with a sitter in the goalmouth in the 56th minute, helping Gomez to his third goal in the last two games.

After Pomona-Pitzer tied the score, Laidlaw again set up a teammate from close range, when he turned the corner and beat a defender into the left side of the penalty area before sending a cross to Rafael Otero in front of the net, just outside the six-yard box. Otero settled and buried the shot from close range for the game-winner, his team-high fifth goal of the season.

Laidlaw joins Otero as the second SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week award winner for the Stags this season. Otero won it after he had three goals in two games on the CMS trip to Oregon, which resulted in a 3-0 win over Willamette and a 2-2 tie with Pacific Lutheran.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when it hosts La Verne for a 7 p.m. contest at Pritzlaff Field.
