Edward Cartee Named Head Coach of CMS Men's Soccer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Edward Cartee, who has spent the last decade as an assistant coach with Division III power Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, has accepted the position as the new head coach of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer program, Erica Perkins Jasper, the William B. Arce Director of Athletics, Physical Education, & Recreation and George R. Roberts Fellow, announced today.

During his tenure at Trinity under head coach Paul McGinlay, Cartee helped the Tigers to a combined record of 189 wins, 29 losses and 16 ties, good for an .842 winning percentage. He helped Trinity to three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals in 2013, 2014, and 2015, and to 20-win seasons for five straight seasons from 2013-17. The 2021 Tigers also lost only one game in the entire season, finishing 16-1-2.

Overall in Cartee's eleven seasons, he helped lead the team to ten conference championships and ten NCAA Tournament berths, advancing to the sectionals (Sweet Sixteen) six times in addition to the three quarterfinals appearances. In 2018, the Trinity coaching staff was recognized as the West Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

"It is an honor to join a program representing such prestigious academic institutions, and I am enthused to dedicate myself to leading the Stags soccer program," said Cartee. "The time I've spent at Trinity University has been a tremendous experience, and I'm excited about the opportunity now at CMS.  I'm grateful to many mentors and friends, and though I will miss all the players I've trained in Texas, I'm looking forward to working with the team this spring and preparing for our fall season."

While serving as an assistant at Trinity, Cartee was also simultaneously the head coach of the boys soccer team at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio, where he compiled a .738 winning percentage over 11 seasons.  His teams won five state championships, including four in a row from 2017-20, and reached the state finals again this past month.

Cartee earned numerous high school coaching awards with Central Catholic. United Soccer Coaches elected him as the Texas Private/Parochial Coach of the Year for three straight seasons. He was named the San Antonio Express-News Boys Soccer Coach of the Year in 2017, and the 2014 TAPPS Division I Coach of the Year.  He was also selected for the 2017-18 class of the prestigious 30-Under-30 Program by United Soccer Coaches.

Cartee played for Trinity from 2005-08 before joining the coaching staff four years after graduation. He helped the Tigers reach the national finals as a junior, and the national quarterfinal as a freshman and senior. He also played for the Bradenton Academics in the Premier Development League from 2005-10, helping his team to the national semifinals in 2009, and played for Taipei City FC in Taiwan, which he helped to a league title.

"CMS is getting a great one," said McGinlay, who is entering his 33rd season as the head coach at Trinity and has the second-best winning percentage in NCAA Division III history (531-87-34, .840). "They threw away the mold when they built Edward. He's loyal, committed, hard-working, and the smartest guy in the room all the time. He's prepared for what's in front of him, and has been for some time, but the right job had to pop open and CMS is a perfect fit. He hasn't even left yet, and I'm already starting to notice what a massive hole he's leaving behind. I can't say enough good things about him, and the same holds true for his players, his former teammates, our alumni, everyone."

Cartee holds a United States Soccer Federation "A" License, and was a summa cum laude graduate of Trinity with a triple major in history, Chinese and Spanish. He earned ESPN Academic All-America distinction as a senior, and went on to attend National Taiwan Normal University in Taiwan with a Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship, participating in the university's postgraduate language immersion program.

"We are thrilled to welcome Edward to CMS," said Perkins Jasper.  "I am grateful to our search committee, Rachana Bhat, Raechel Holmes, Greg Lonzo, David Nolan, Peter Osgood, Chris Spells, and Omar Zazueta, as well as Dean of the Faculty Heather Antecol and faculty athletics representative Jonathan Petropoulos, who were incredible in the search process.  Edward's reputation as a leader and teacher is exceptional, and I know our student-athletes are eager to start working with him.  We are excited about the fall soccer season, as well as the positive impact Stag soccer intends to make on our campus and in our community."
