Barton's Late Goal Gives CMS Men's Soccer Fifth Win in a Row

ORANGE, Calif. - Will Barton broke a scoreless tie in the 79th minute as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team came away with a 1-0 road win over Chapman on Wednesday evening.

With the win, the Stags improve to 5-1-1 on the season, and 3-0 in the SCIAC, picking up their fifth straight win since an overtime loss to Westmont of the NAIA back on Sept. 3. Chapman slips to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league play with the loss.

"It's nice to get a win in a tough game," said Head Coach Ryan Fahey. "The group had a really strong performance during the second half. I think a lot of it came from our focus and energy, which was great that half."

The Stags nearly took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the second half, but a free kick from Troy Lehenbauer hit off the right post and stayed out, and the Stags were unable to pounce on a loose ball bounding through the goalmouth.

With just 11:13 remaining, though, the Stags broke the deadlock as a Tommy Brown pass found Barton, who finished for his first goal of the season. His last game-winning goal came in overtime against Whittier in 2019, which clinched the regular season title for the Stags.

CMS finished with a 13-8 edge in shots on the day, as Eduardo De Anda had four saves to get the shutout, improving his record to 5-0-1 this season and 14-1-2 in his career, after a 9-1-1 record as a sophomore in 2019.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Occidental for a 7 p.m. contest at Pritzlaff Field.
