CMS Men's Soccer Earns Draw at Redlands, Remains Tied for First in SCIAC

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team tied Redlands for the second time this season, coming away with a 0-0 tie on Saturday afternoon at Farquhar Field to keep a share of first place in the SCIAC standings.

Redlands could have pulled even with CMS with a win, and would have had the tiebreaker after tying the first meeting 2-2 at CMS, but the Stags were able to come away with a key road point. That point was made even more significant by Whittier tying 0-0 at Cal Lutheran on Saturday night, leaving CMS and Whittier still tied for first at 7-1-2 in league play, with Redlands one game back at 6-2-2.

Sophomore goalie Eduardo De Anda had four saves to get the shutout for CMS, remaining unbeaten in his college career with a 6-0-1 record this year. His counterpart, Adrian Munoz of Redlands, had a big day with eight saves (six in the second half) to prevent CMS from coming away with a road win.

The first half was uneventful with only three total shot attempts, two by CMS, as the teams headed to the locker room tied 0-0. The game immediately opened up in the second half, as Munoz and De Anda were each called on to make saves in the first three minutes after halftime.

With 17 minutes to go in regulation, the Stags started to apply some heavy pressure to push for a winning goal. Junior midfielder Nate Huntington had a shot saved off a corner kick with 15:30 to play. Sophomore forward William Barton had a shot saved off the fifth corner kick that CMS took in an eight-minute span in the 83rd minute, and junior William Birchard had another shot saved less than a minute later.

DeAnda was called on in the 88th minute to make a key save and the CMS defense dealt with a corner kick from Redlands with just over a minute to play to force the game into the extra session. The Stags outshot Redlands 5-2 in overtime, but Munoz was able to make the save on the only one that was on target (from Birchard).

CMS finished with a 13-10 edge in shots and a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks on the day. The Stags had 10 corner kicks after halftime, including eight in the second half, but were unable to get a conversion.

CMS closes out the regular season next week with a huge road game at Whittier on Wednesday in a head-to-head battle for first place in the conference, before closing out at home against Caltech on Saturday. The Stags defeated the Poets 1-0 the first time, and would have the tiebreaker if the teams drew on Wednesday.
