Ben Pelz Earns SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week Award

CLAREMONT, Calif. - First-year defender Ben Pelz was named the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week Award for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 6, the league office announced today.

Pelz earned the honor after picking an opportune time to score his first collegiate goal for the Stags. Just 1:20 after Redlands struck for the game's first goal on a rocket from outside the penalty box in the 71st minute, Pelz helped seize the momentum back from the Bulldogs with an end-to-end run. He played the ball forward to first-year Jake Allmon, then got the ball back on a return pass, breaking into the penalty area, where he was able to finish from the top of the six-yard box to level the score back up at 1-1.

The goal helped CMS come away with the home tie and remain undefeated in league play this season. He also contributed defensively to a shutout win over La Verne on Saturday, helping the Stags to a 5-0-1 league mark through the first six games of this season, and a 17-2-1 mark in SCIAC play in the last two years.

CMS will be back in action for a big rivalry home contest on Saturday, when it takes on Pomona-Pitzer at Pritzlaff Field for a 7 p.m. contest.
