Ethan Tyng's Two First-Half Goals Carry CMS Men's Soccer Past Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. - Sophomore Ethan Tyng scored two first-half goals 3:11 apart as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team remained in sole possession of first place in the SCIAC with a 2-0 road win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, CMS now improves to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the SCIAC while stretching its win streak to five games, and its SCIAC win streak to nine games dating back to last year. The Stags remain the only unbeaten team left in league play after handing Whittier its first loss on Wednesday. Caltech falls to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Both of Tyng's finishes came from in close off of crosses from his teammates. The first goal came at the 17:37 mark when senior forward Cole Smith got the ball unmarked on the right side of the penalty area. Smith sent a low cross through the box to the top of the six, and Tyng was able to one-touch it home to give the Stags an early 1-0 lead.

Just minutes later, Smith again helped create the goal down the left side, which came down the left side this time, where junior midfielder Daniel Rohde crossed it into the goal area. Tyng was the first to it, and after a deflection, he calmly volleyed the ball in from a yard out to give him his second goal of the day. It marks the second time this year that Tyng has had a two-goal game after also scoring twice in a 3-1 win over No. 9 Trinity on Sept. 6.

CMS was close to even more first-half goals, but were denied by the woodwork twice. Junior defender William Birchard hit the crossbar from 20 yards, and junior forward Leonardo Lindo hit the post from 12 yards out. The Stags had a 19-2 edge in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks in the first half.

Veli Christodolou had 11 saves for Caltech to help keep the score close. Sophomore Jacob Mays had two saves to get the shutout for the Stags, his second of the season and 17th in his two-year career, as CMS finished with a 26-3 edge in shots and a 14-1 edge in corner kicks.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it returns home for a big 7 p.m. contest with Redlands at Pritzlaff Field.
