CMS Men's Soccer Falls in Double Overtime to Oglethorpe in 2019 Opener

ATLANTA, Ga. - Sophomore forward William Barton scored early in the second half to knot the score, but Oglethorpe when on to tally the game-winner on a corner kick midway through the second overtime and take a 2-1 win over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team on opening day at Emory University.

The loss snaps a seven-game unbeaten streak for the Stags, which concluded last year with six straight regular season wins and a 0-0 tie in the SCIAC semifinals (which it dropped on penalty kicks).

In fact, the Stags did not allow a goal in any of those seven games, on their way to leading the nation in team defense last season with only four goals allowed. That shutout streak was snapped 22:05 into the second half when Ryan Marcano was able to score for Oglethorpe from inside the box to give his team a 1-0 lead.

CMS regrouped at halftime, though, and Barton was able to find the equalizer quickly, scoring on a loose ball from eight yards out 2:20 after halftime to level the score at a goal apiece.

Sophomore goalie Jacob Mays had two big saves in succession in the 68th minute, clearing the first one over the line and then making the save on the ensuing corner kick to keep the game deadlocked.  Barton then nearly earned both a brace and a late game-winner when he had his shot saved over the line in 89th minute by Oglethorpe goalie Scott Zoino.

Barton got on the back end of a corner kick from junior defender William Bichard in the first minute of the second overtime, but had it sail wide. Mays then saved a shot from Oglethorpe's James Williams in the 105th minute, but Williams responded with a goal off the ensuing corner kick at the 104:22 mark to give his team the win.

Shots were even on the day, with Oglethorpe ending up with a narrow 19-18 edge. Mays had six saves for the Stags, while Zoino finished with four to get the win.

CMS returns to action on the second day of the Sonny Carter Invitational at Emory, when it meets the host Eagles on Sunday night at 7 p.m. (4 p.m. Pacific).
