Video Feature: The CMS-ence of Aidan Johnson

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Aidan Johnson will celebrate his senior day with the men's soccer team on Wednesday night against Redlands (7 p.m.) at Pritzlaff Field after a four-year career which has seen him ascend into a key role as a holding midfielder on a team that has allowed only four goals all season, while also interning the last three summers on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

A government major at Claremont McKenna and a native of Eugene, Oregon, Johnson interned with Oregon senator Jeff Merkley's office in the summer of 2016, then interned with the U.S. Senate in 2017 and with the U.S. House of Represntatives this past summer.

On the field, Johnson has played a big role in helping CMS record 12 shutouts in its first 15 games this season, one shy of the school record shared by the 1984 and 1985 teams. Although he's a midfielder, his role is mostly defensive in keeping teams from getting through to the back four. His impact isn't seen in individual stats, but is largely felt in the team stats, where CMS ranks third in the nation in goals against average (0.28) and fourth in shutout percentage (80.0) while the season high in saves for freshman goalie Jacob Mays is still only four.

Senior Day is more than just a chance to honor Johnson and fellow senior Scott Montague. It will also be a huge battle for first place in the SCIAC, as CMS and Redlands come into the final week tied at 10-2. A draw would favor CMS, which won the first meeting at Redlands 1-0, although the Stags still have to travel to third-place Occidental (9-3) on Saturday in the regular season finale before the 2018 title can be decided.
