LA VERNE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team held a 22-5 edge in shots and an 11-1 advantage in shots on net, but the one La Verne shot on target went in as the Leopards took a 1-0 home win over Stags on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Stags fall to 10-2 overall and 7-2 in the SCIAC, while La Verne improves to 5-6 overall and 3-6 in the league.
The only goal of the game at the 9:07 mark of the first half as Jack Kolodge scored off a Johnny DeRueda assist less than ten minutes in. The Stags pushed for an equalizer before intermission, but Tristan Polakowski, who had 11 saves, denied sophomore midfielder Nate Huntington and freshman forward Ethan Tyng on successive shots in the 42nd minute.
Sophomore defender William Birchard forced two Polakowski saves in the opening minutes of the second half, and Huntington tried one final chance in the last seconds, but Polakowski stopped it for his 11th to finish off the shutout.
Birchard finished with eight shots (four on net) to lead the Stags, while Huntington had four. CMS had an 8-4 edge in corner kicks on the day as well.
CMS will have a week off before returning home to face Pomona-Pitzer next Saturday at 7 p.m.
