Alone in First! CMS Men's Soccer Moves to 5-0 in SCIAC with School-Record Eighth Straight Shutout

REDLANDS, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Nate Huntington scored the game's only goal in the 69th minute and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team set a new single-season school record with its eighth straight shutout as it knocked off Redlands 1-0 on the road in a battle between SCIAC unbeatens on Saturday evening at Farquhar Field.

With the win, the Stags are now 8-0 on the year and 5-0 in the SCIAC, while Redlands, which came into the evening tied with the Stags atop the table, falls to 4-1 in league play.

CMS is also yet to concede a goal all season, after picking up its eighth shutout win in a row,a new single-season school record for the program. The 2004 team and the 1988 team each had seven-game shutout streaks, which was the single-season mark coming into this year, which the Stags eclipsed with the win over Redlands. Dating back to last year, CMS has nine straight shutouts, and a shutout streak that currently stands at 856:02, since a late-first half goal in a 1-0 loss to Whittier in the second to last game of the 2017 campaign.

Freshman goalie Jacob Mays, who has played every minute in goal thus far, had four saves to pick up his eighth shutout as he has still yet to allow a goal in his collegiate career.

Huntington was the only player on either team to find the net, as he scored off a pass from freshman William Barton with 21:35 to play. The Stags had to withstand some late pressure from the Bulldogs to hold on for the win, as Mays had his third save of the contest with 8:46 left on a shot from Collin Chubb-Fertal, and then had his final one with 1:32 to go off a shot from Avery Jacobson. That final save resulted in a Redlands corner kick, but the Stags were able to defend the last set piece and finish out the win.

CMS also had a close call on a corner kick early in the second half, as Joey Kenney had a header blocked and then put the rebound over the bar in a bid to try to give the Bulldogs the lead. That came after an uneventful first half in which there would only five shots combined between the teams (Redlands 3, CMS 2).

Redlands ended up with a 13-6 edge in shots, although only a 4-3 edge in shots on net, and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Stags will next be in action when they have another tough road test at Chapman on Wednesday, beginning at 4 p.m.
