Adam Singer Named SCIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior defender Adam Singer was named the SCIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games through Sunday, Sept. 16, the league office announced today.
Singer had a key role in leading a CMS defense that has been virtually impenetrable so far in the 2018 season. The Stags improved to 6-0 with their fifth and sixth shutout wins in a row to start the year, defeating Pomona-Pitzer 2-0 on Wednesday and Cal Lutheran 3-0 on Saturday. CMS allowed only five shot attempts combined over the two games, outshooting Pomona-Pitzer 11-2 and then holding an 18-3 edge in that category with only one of the five shot attempts ending up on target.
In addition to his role defensively as a center back and team captain, Singer also contributed on the offensive end against Pomona-Pitzer, getting his head on a corner kick and sending it into the goalmouth, where it ricocheted off a pair of players before being finished by sophomore Henry Kraham.
For the season, the Stags have not allowed a goal, while freshman goalie Jacob Mays has started his career with six straight shutouts, only needing a combined eight saves over those six games. Singer, who missed all of last year with an injury, has helped solidify a defense that has led the Stags to more wins already in the first three weeks (six) than they had last season (four).
It is the second week in a row that CMS has had the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week honor from its back four. Last week, sophomore William Birchard earned it after scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Macalaster, in addition to helping the Stags to two shutouts.
The Stags will next be in action on Wednesday night when they host Whittier for a 7 p.m. contest at Pritzlaff Field.
