Physical 2-1 overtime loss to Chapman

Physical 2-1 overtime loss to Chapman

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team came up short 2-1 against Chapman for their first overtime loss of the season. The very physical game saw 10 yellow cards which included two for a player on each team, leaving just 20 people on the field by the end of the match.

The Stags began the game at a slower pace than usual. Early in the game, the CMS defense broke down momentarily and allowed a Chapman pass across the front of the goal. Boston Kimmel drove it past Stag keeper Daniel Cui (CMC), assisted by Elliot Braund. With Chapman on the board just seven minutes into the game, the Stags finished the rest of the half with inexplicable lethargy.

In the first half, CMS took just one shot on goal compared to nine off the feet of the Panthers.

The Stags took the field in the second half with renewed vigor. In the first ten minutes, CMS doubled their shots from the first half with two attempts by Mehron Abdi (CMC) and Luc Stervinou (CMC) following a corner kick from Ryan Karle (CMC). Ultimately each team had six chances from the corners in the game.

CMS' goal came when Michael Crowley (CMC) curved a free kick around the wall into the upper corner of the goal. This was Crowley's third goal of the season.

Four yellow cards and thirty minutes later found the game tied 1-1 after regulation time.

As the first overtime wound down, Chapman's Lorenzo Belassen crossed the ball in from the left side, directly to Braund's feet. Braun was able to convert on the perfectly placed pass and score the game-winner with 1:20 remaining on the clock.

The Stags fall to 5-5-3 in SCIAC but remain in the sixth spot in the conference rankings. Next, CMS plays at Cal Lutheran on Oct. 24 and then across the street for the second edition of the Sixth Street rivalry against Pomona-Pitzer on Oct. 28.
