Draw in Sixth Street rivalry showdown

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team tied 0-0 with Pomona-Pitzer in the annual Sixth Street rivalry game in front of a rowdy crowd on Saturday night. The Stags out-shot the Sagehens 29-12 but could not quite finish.

There were a plethora of opportunities for CMS tonight in the offensive half in addition to the Stags' defense stepping up and successfully kept PP at bay.

The first opportunity came in the 20th minute as junior Michael Crowley (CMC) took a free kick about 35 yards out and found sophomore Mark Harris' (CMC) head who flicked it just high of the goal. Another came just five minutes later when Crowley beat the keeper on the left side of the frame and looked like he was going to be able to finish with a tap in. The ball then rolled the width of the goal, glancing off the right post and back into the possession of the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer countered with a shot ripped by Mike Barit in the 38th minute, just right of the goal.

As time wound down in regulation, junior Ryan Karle (CMC) fired a promising ball towards PP's net but the keeper, Ben Mitchell snagged it for a save. Mitchell recorded nine saves on the night.

In the first overtime period, CMS and PP had back to back chances in the 102nd and 103rd minutes. First, junior Alex Censullo (CMC) had two opportunities in front of the goal but without any luck. Seconds later, Mark Raftrey for Pomona-Pitzer sailed a free kick from about 25 yards high of the net.

The Stags' defense made it so sophomore keeper Daniel Cui (CMC) only had to save five shots over the course of all four periods. Junior Cole Mora (CMC) and Harris grounded the defense and contributed to the Stags' fourth shutout of the season.

Offensively, midfielders Mehron Abdi (CMC) and Matthew Swift (CMC) each contributed at least two shots while senior Taylor Lemmon (CMC) led the Stags with eight.

CMS (2-3-3, 2-2-2) host Cal Lutheran (2-5-2, 2-3-1) on Wednesday, Sept. 30 on Pritzlaff Field under the lights.
