Stags score eight and beat Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team beat Caltech 8-0 on Wednesday evening.  The Stags held onto the top seed in SCIAC after a shutout vs. Caltech Beavers.

The scoring began when freshman Dylan Saffer assisted senior Ethan Hallberg only eight minutes into the game. Soon after, Hallberg assisted freshman Michael Crowley to put the Stags up 2-0.

Freshman Mehron Abdi sailed a shot past the Beavers' keeper increasing the Stags' lead to three goals.

Seconds after re-entering the game for CMS, freshman Ian Shelton contributed to a perfectly placed header goal by junior Joseph Romano.  At half time the Stags were leading Caltech 4-0.

Caltech fouled a Stag just outside the box on the right side of the field.  Freshman Cole Mora took the foul kick for CMS and found Saffer who kicked it in for the fifth goal of the night.

Sophomore Louis Brann scored on a dipping shot just out of the keeper's reach to push the score to 6-0. After some rough play in the box, CMS was awarded a penalty kick and sophomore Hogan Marhoefer converted the opportunity into a goal. Marhoefer scored again on a small breakaway less than a minute later. Marhoefer also had two goals during the game that CMS played at Caltech.

With Marhoefer's pair of goals, the Stags took the lead 8-0 which was ultimately the final score. CMS improves their SCIAC record to 10-3-1 and are alone in first place with two conference matches to play.

Before finishing off the SCIAC regular season, CMS hosts UC Santa Cruz on Saturday (10/26) at 2pm on Pritzlaff Field.
