Victorious Stags take No. 1 in SCIAC

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team beat Redlands 2-1 in tonight's much anticipated conference matchup. Redlands was leading CMS by one win in SCIAC standings going into the match.  With the win tonight CMS is now on top of SCIAC.

In their first meeting, Redlands won the game 3-1. With revenge on their mind CMS took the field with purpose.

Only ten minutes into the game CMS scored their first goal.  Senior Ethan Hallberg drilled one into the net to put the Stags up 1-0.

During the first half, CMS had ten shots to Redlands' two. The first half was also heavily laden with fouls: 18 by CMS and 13 by Redlands.

Two minutes after freshman Ian Shelton re-entered the game in the second half he scored for the Stags, assisted by senior Daniel Price. CMS took the lead 2-0.

As the clock dwindled, the Stags fragmented for a second and the Bulldogs took advantage of the opportunity and scored off the foot of junior Matej Kustura to make the score 2-1.

With less than a minute remaining, Redlands made one final drive but the Stags' defense stayed strong. CMS won the game and launched themselves into first place in the SCIAC standings.

Hallberg led the team with three shots as CMS totaled 14 on the game. Sophomore Joseph Mondello played an excellent game in goal with four saves.

The Stags host Caltech on Wednesday (10/23) at 7 pm.
