Stags come up short to Sagehens

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team lost to Pomona-Pitzer 1-0 in Saturday's heated rivalry game. Both teams came out aggressive but the Sagehens were able to score the only goal of the game.

The first time these teams met this season the Stags came out on top 2-1 in double overtime. Despite entering the game with CMS in 1st and PP in 7th place in SCIAC the PP-CMS rivalry game always brings out the confidence and aggressor in each team.

After the first four minutes there were already four fouls called and it was clear that the game was going to be physical. The Stags totaled four shots in the first half and goal keeper Alex Choi had two saves. The teams traded yellow cards during a skirmish around midfield.

Nathan Shekita scored for the Sagehens six minutes into the second half for the lone goal of the game.

The game had to be paused for a few injured Stags to come out of the game including Choi. Sophomore Joseph Mondello entered the game for the five minutes it took Choi to recover.

The Stags fought until the end but could not find a way to score. Sophomore Hogan Marhoefer had a team high of four shots, three of which were on goal.

With the CMS' loss to Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands' win over Occidental, the Stags fall to second in SCIAC.

CMS hosts Redlands on Monday (10/21) at 7pm to battle for first place in SCIAC.
