Caroline Cox - Women's Tennis

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The CMS women's tennis team had a big weekend at the ITA Indoor Nationals, including a 6-0 weekend for junior Caroline Cox, who was making a homecoming to her home state of Kentucky for the Athenas.

The big match was the finals, where CMS (ranked No. 2 nationally) battled No. 3 Emory in what has become a significant rivalry in the past few seasons. A year ago, Emory took a 5-3 win over the Athenas in the ITA Indoor Nationals, while two years ago, CMS defeated the Eagles in the NCAA Division III National Championship match.

This time around, the Athenas prevailed 5-4 in a match where almost every point was hotly contested. One exception was Cox's singles match, in which she cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win to give CMS some momentum back after the Eagles had pulled even at 2-2. Cox and senior Catherine Allen, the top-ranked doubles team in the nation, also picked up an 8-6 win to help the Athenas pull even after Emory took the first doubles point.

Cox, a Louisville native who was playing just over an hour from her hometown in Nicholasville, is now undefeated in singles since returning from studying abroad in the fall, standing at 8-0 so far on the young season. She and the Athenas (who are 10-0) will look to stay hot with three home matches this weekend, including a SCIAC match on Friday (3 p.m.) with Cal Lutheran and two matches on Sunday against Army (10 a.m.) and Swarthmore (2 p.m.).
