Smith was the quintessential team leader. An intense and fierce competitor, he earned first-team All-District honors his senior year on a team that went 13-12. His senior year was the first winning season for CMS since 1972. Smith was a great rebounder and an excellent scorer. Twice he ranked in the top-20 nationally in rebounding. He was respected by opposing players and coaches alike for his tough style of play. Individual awards: first-team All-District (1980), first-team All-SCIAC (1979, 1980), SCIAC Ted Ducey Memorial Award (1980), Team MVP (1979, 1980), Team Captain (1980), third-team All-District (1979) and Miller Southern California Player of the Week.
