Bio

Laughton was the program's first outstanding distance runner. He lettered in cross country and track all four years at Claremont Men's College. He was Claremont-Mudd's first SCIAC track & field champion and the first SCIAC cross country champion ever from Claremont Men's College. As a junior in 1960-61, he finished first at the SCIAC Cross Country Championships in the fall and won the 1 mile at the SCIAC Track & Field Championships in the spring. He also earned NAIA All-America honors that spring in the mile and steeplechase. He was a three-time first-team All-SCIAC honoree in cross country, a feat that was not accomplished by another Stag until 12 years later. Laughton was the team captain of the track & field team as a senior in 1962. School records held upon graduation: 880 yards (1:53.9), 1-mile (4:14.1), 2 mile (9:41.0), 3 mile (15:47.5), 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:47.5) and 10,000 meters (33:23.0).
