Athletics Director Update and Newsletter (Spring/Summer 2016-17)

Greetings Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics Community,

CMS Athletics has been and continues to be a program on the rise. During the 2016-17 academic year, the Athenas and Stags teamed up for the program’s best year ever — a fourth place finish nationally in the NCAA Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup standings.

All told, 15 teams represented CMS this year at the NCAA Division III Championships. The unprecedented achievements of the Stags and Athenas are a testament to the incredibly dedicated student-athletes and coaches that represent CMS, and the entire community that supports our program.

Off the field, CMS teams made incredible contributions as well. The Athena Softball team was recognized by the NCAA for its consistent volunteering efforts at a local elementary school. You can find the story on the cover of Champion magazine’s spring issue. In the classroom, several teams and student-athletes received All-Academic awards, most recently women’s and men’s swimming & diving, women’s water polo, and men’s golf.

With the recent celebration of the 45th anniversary of Title IX on June 23, I would like to honor all of the Athenas past, present, and future for their successes and contributions to the CMS program. The latest CMS Athletics Newsletter is packed full of exciting news, and touches on the 45th anniversary of Title IX. Other highlights include a story about new (and returning) women’s soccer coach Jennifer Clark, details about the on-campus golf facility, recaps on our spring sports, and much more. I hope you enjoy catching up on what’s happening with CMS Athletics.

Have a safe and fun-filled summer. We’ll see you back here in Claremont in just a couple of months to cheer on the 2017-18 Athenas and Stags.

We thank you for your support.

Go CMS!

Sincerely,

Terrance Tumey
