Athletics Director Update and Newsletter (Fall/Winter 2016-17)

Terrance Tumey

Greetings CMS Athletics Community,

Happy New Year from Claremont! What an unbelievable school year so far, and we are just at the halfway point. From the successes of the Athenas and Stags in competition, to the official opening of Roberts Pavilion, this year has been chock-full of memorable moments. With CMS’ winter teams in the middle of its seasons, and spring sports nearly upon us, the Athenas and Stags are poised for continued success in 2017. At the conclusion of the fall, CMS ranked 12th nationally in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings and led the race for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) All-Sports Trophy.

The women’s and men’s cross country teams won the SCIAC Championships and finished 15th and fifth, respectively, at the NCAA Championships. The Athena volleyball team finished as regular-season conference co-champion and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, while the women’s soccer program won the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, set a program record for wins in a season (17), and won its first-round NCAA Tournament game. The Stag soccer team improved five games in the win column compared to 2015 and made the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, while the men’s water polo team finished second at the SCIAC Championships. Rounding out the fall, the Stag football team secured its third winning season in a row, tied for second in the SCIAC standings, and won the Sixth Street Rivalry for the fourth straight year. Congratulations to all of our fall students-athletes and coaches. For an in-depth recap of the last several months, please read the CMS Athletics Fall/Winter Newsletter.

As I reflect on my first six months in Claremont, I want to thank everyone for welcoming me into the CMS community. I have truly enjoyed listening to your memories about CMS’ impressive history, and I have learned a great deal from your insights and knowledge about our program’s founding principles, set forth by Bill Arce and so many others.

Thank you for your support of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics, and I look forward to seeing you in Claremont this winter and spring as we cheer on the Athenas and Stags.

Go CMS!

Sincerely,
