A.D. Update and CMS Newsletter (Fall/Winter 2018-19)

Greetings Friends of CMS Athletics,
The fall semester is in the books and we will shortly welcome the spring sports back to campus. The basketball and swimming & diving teams are here and in the midst of their seasons. My return to the athletic department as interim director has been enjoyable and exhilarating. The CMS program has been on a strong positive trajectory for the past decade and there is a long list of people to thank and recognize for the successes we enjoy.
I am proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes, coaches, and department staff. Some of their accomplishments are highly visible. Read about our year so far in the most recent CMS Athletics Newsletter.
The success in competition this fall is obvious and an outcome of the good work done every day and is what we have come to expect. Of our seven fall sports, four earned bids to the NCAA Championships, and the Stags returned to the top of the SCIAC standings in football and soccer. Here are a few other fall highlights:
• For the 10th season in a row, both cross country teams competed at the NCAA Championships after the women and men won the West Regionals.
• Stags Football earned its first-ever NCAA playoff appearance, and first conference championship since 1987.
• The soccer teams both showed outstanding defense with the Stags defense ranked No. 1 nationally and the Athenas giving up only 10 goals all season.
• Volleyball won its fourth-straight SCIAC championship, and competed in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth-consecutive year.
• Stags Water Polo finished as the runner-up in the SCIAC after a strong finish in conference play, which led them to the championship match.
Several other of our fall activities are having a significant impact. CMS has been recognized and will be honored later this month at the NCAA Convention for it’s ongoing community service work at Mountain View Elementary School. The outpouring of support evidenced during the ‘1946 Challenge’ by participation and funds donated were especially gratifying and helpful in our efforts to provide the best possible experiences for our CMS student-athletes. Thank you to all who made this inaugural outreach so successful. In November, four new members were inducted into the CMS Hall of Fame: Sarah DeGraw (SC '02, track & field), Heather Schroder (CMC '96, basketball and track & Field), Kurt Hocker (CMC '88, track & field and basketball) and Bob Hayes (CMC '71, football, basketball, and baseball).
Working in Roberts Pavilion reminds me how the beautiful efficiency of our facility has transformed and enhanced the operation of the entire program and offerings of the College. My ‘bonus lap’ has been especially enjoyable to date, and the spring semester will fly by as we complete the winter seasons and bring on the 10 spring sport seasons. We’ll also be continuing the search for the next Director of Athletics and I look forward to welcoming and helping to orient our new leader.
