Terrance J. Tumey begins tenure as CMS Director of Athletics, Physical Education & Recreational Services

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Claremont McKenna College President Hiram E. Chodosh in March of 2016 appointed Terrance J. Tumey as the new Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges (CMS) Director of Athletics, Physical Education & Recreational Services and William B. Arce Professor and George R. Roberts Fellow. Tumey's tenure as Director of Athletics began on July 1, 2016. He is the fifth Director of Athletics in CMS history, succeeding Michael Sutton '76, who held the position for 15 years.

"This search focused on finding someone who closely matches the values and mission of CMS and who believes in mentoring and educating responsible leaders. We also wanted someone who has a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of sports in the 21st century and the skills, experience, and vision to sustain and enhance CMS' great success in NCAA Division III Athletics," Chodosh said. "Terrance distinguished himself throughout the search process as someone with the vitality, character, experience, and leadership we were looking for in this critical position."

Prior to taking over at CMS, Tumey most recently served as the Senior Advisor to the President for Intercollegiate Athletics Success at Holy Names University (Calif.).

"Our athletics, fitness and wellness programs are integral components of the world-class academic experiences offered to our students," Tumey said. "Teamwork, leadership, winning in the face of adversity and losing with grace are values that will serve our students far beyond their years in Claremont. My goal is to work with our coaches, staff and campus community to continue to enhance the opportunities and experiences of CMS student-athletes and the student body as a whole. I'd like to thank the Board of Trustees, President Chodosh, and the members of the Search Committee for providing me the opportunity to serve in this transformative academic experience."

Tumey brings an extraordinary professional record to the role including his years as Director of Athletics at the University of California, Davis (2012-2015), where he expanded the profile of the university regionally and nationally. He secured funding in excess of $11 million to support UC Davis' inaugural master plan to define an athletic corridor to celebrate student achievements within NCAA Division I athletics, generated a 40 percent increase in revenue for athletics, and expanded the national broadcast package in men's basketball. In addition, four UC Davis teams received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for academic performance, and two student-athletes have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships over the past three years. He also played an important support role in UC Davis' efforts to expand its athletic presence on the international stage.

During Tumey's time as Director of Athletics at NCAA Division II Dominican University California (2009-2012), DUC Athletics received the Pacific West Conference's (PWC) Academic Achievement Award for highest student-athlete grade-point average for three-straight years (2010, 2011, and 2012), the first institution in conference history to repeat this achievement.

For several years he also served as the Director of Football Administration for the San Francisco 49ers (2004-2009) and directed the financial operations for the team with budgeted expenditures in excess of $35 million, managed administrative issues for team employees including the coaching staff, oversaw contract negotiations and the resolution of grievances, worked with the NFL on game scheduling, and led the team's training camp relocation. Beyond his administrative experience, Tumey has several years of coaching experience as an assistant football coach with UCLA (1995-1999) and the Denver Broncos (1999-2001).

Tumey holds an M.B.A. from the UCLA Anderson School of Management with a focus on entrepreneurship and strategy and a B.A. in Political Science, also from UCLA, with a concentration in business economics.

During his time as an undergraduate at UCLA, Tumey played football for the Bruins and was a three-time All-Pacific-10 first-team choice as a nose guard for coach Terry Donahue (1985-87), Tumey helped the Bruins win four bowl games (including the Rose Bowl during the 1985 season), compile a record of 36-10-2 and finish ranked in the top-10 three times during his four-year career.
