The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team recorded a 3.501 grade point average in the 2015-16 academic year and earned recognition from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) as a Division III All-Academic Team.

It has been another outstanding year for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics. On the largest scale, CMS broke into the top-10 in the Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup. During the 2015-16 year, many of the CMS student athletes were honored for their athletic and academic achievements.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was represented by 201 student-athletes on the 2015-16 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) All-Academic Team. The SCIAC recognizes student-athletes who have achieved at least a cumulative 3.4 grade point average and completed one full year at their institution.

CMS won 11 SCIAC championships, had 13 teams participate in the NCAA Championships, finished tied for 10th in the Directors' Cup Standings and tallied four national championships (3 individual and 1 team). Take a look back at the 2015-16 year in this highlight video.

Sophomore pitcher Anna Gurr (CMC) earned All-American Third Team honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) at the banquet in Salem, Va. on the evening of May 25. Gurr is the third athlete from the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball program to receive this award.

The Athenas were led in part by stellar seasons from sophomore pitcher Anna Gurr (CMC) and senior outfielder Tara Robinson (CMC) and for their efforts, they were selected to the recently announced National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region teams.

“The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat” perfectly described the day of softball for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday. The Athenas won the first game against the previously unbeaten Linfield Wildcats 3-0. This win forced the “if necessary” championship game against Linfield again in the NCAA Spokane Regional. In a dramatic and emotional back-and-forth game, CMS ultimately fell in a 6-5 heartbreaker in eight innings.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team stayed alive through two elimination games on Saturday in the NCAA tournament beating Whitworth 3-0 and then George Fox 3-1 in a rematch of yesterday’s game. Sophomore Anna Gurr (CMC) earned both wins as the team recorded its 19th shutout of the season.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team came up short, losing 5-2 to George Fox in the first game of the Spokane Regional in the NCAA Tournament. This marks George Fox’s first ever NCAA appearance and win. With the loss, the Athenas are sent to the bottom half of the bracket to face the host school, Whitworth, in an elimination game tomorrow, May 14 at 1:30 p.m. In the double-elimination tournament, CMS can still vie for a regional championship in the days to come.

After winning the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned an automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament. The Athenas were sent, along with Linfield and George Fox to Spokane, Wash. for a four-team regional hosted by Whitworth. Consistent with the NCAA’s regional rankings, CMS earned the No. 1 seed followed by No. 2 Whitworth, No. 3 Linfield, and No. 4 George Fox.

The senior catcher from Yorba Linda, Carlene Roberts, hit three home runs in the first day of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament and finished the weekend hitting .667, slugging an outrageous 2.167 and recording a team-leading six RBI.

In the NCAA Selection Show on Monday morning, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team learned they are headed to Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. to face George Fox University in the NCAA Regional. The NCAA released the field of 62 teams that were divided into 14 four-team regionals and two three-team regionals.
