Stags Bounce Back with Wins Over UC Santa Cruz and Chapman

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a tough loss to Williams earlier in the week, the No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team rebounded for a pair of victories on Friday at Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS out-dueled No. 34 UC Santa Cruz 6-3 in a morning match, before earning a 9-0 victory over Chapman in the afternoon session.

Freshman Jack Katzman (CMC) led the Stags with victories at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles in CMS' defeat of regional foe UC Santa Cruz. Katzman improves his singles and doubles records to 16-3 on the season. Junior Captain Julian Gordy (CMC) earned another three-set win at No. 4 singles, his second three-setter in four days, while extending his win streak to five matches. Freshman Robert Liu (CMC) made his dual match debut for CMS at No. 6 singles, only dropping one game and extending the Stags' lead over Santa Cruz to 3-1.

In the afternoon match against Chapman, Liu returned to play No. 1 doubles with sophomore Daniel Park (CMC) and earned an 8-2 win. Sophomore Jay Yeam (CMC) also played in his second doubles match of the day, this time with Jake Williams (HMC) at No. 2. Williams and Yeam earned their third win as a team, securing the doubles sweep against the Panthers. In the singles, Chapman had no answer for CMS' depth, and the Stags yielded only 13 games in six matches. Senior Patrick Wildman (CMC) was first to finish at No. 5, followed by Park at No. 1 and Freshman Casey Morris (CMC) at No. 4.

CMS improves to 17-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play and will take on No. 3 Middlebury on Saturday at 10:00 AM at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS split their two meetings with Middlebury in 2017, falling 6-3 to the Panthers in Austin, Texas in late March, before defeating them in the NCAA Team Semifinals in May. Middlebury will be the fourteenth ranked team in eighteen Division III matches that CMS has played this spring.
