No. 6 Stags Sweep No. 8 Golden Gusties and Poets on Perfect Saturday

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team opened a Saturday doubleheader with a 9-0 victory over the No. 8 Gustavus Adolphus Golden Gusties at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS followed up their sweep from the morning with another 9-0 victory in the afternoon, topping SCIAC foe Whittier in the second-half of their doubleheader. The Stags stayed perfect in eight doubles matches played in three duals over two days, and improve their season dual match doubles record to a collective 59-13.

Against Gustavus in the opener, Freshman Robert Liu (CMC) had his first two-win performance of the season, teaming with Jake Williams (HMC) at No. 3 doubles for an 8-5 victory, and then returning at No. 6 singles for a straight set win to put the Stags up 6-0. At No. 1 singles, in the final match of the dual, sophomore Nikolai Parodi (CMC) avenged a loss from the Fall of his freshman campaign, and defeated the nation's current top D3 player Mohanad Al Houni in a contest decided by a match tie-break. Parodi led 6-3, 4-2 but couldn't preserve the service break in the second set. After dropping the second set in a tie-break - his third in two days - Parodi took command of the match tie-break and won by a comfortable 10-5 margin.

In the afternoon match against Whittier, Williams added two more dominate performances to his three-win day. In doubles, he teamed up with Jay Yeam (CMC) at No. 3 doubles and gave the Stags a 1-0 lead with their 8-2 victory. At No. 6 singles, he dropped just one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 win for CMS' fourth point. Yeam, Casey Morris (CMC) and Jake Berber (CMC) all joined Williams with two wins against Whittier. Berber and Morris formed the Stags' No. 2 doubles team and needed just one break to win 8-5. Morris then won in straight sets at No. 3 singles for his fifth dual match win this season. Berber was also an easy winner at No. 4 singles, his sixth dual match win and eighth overall on the season. In the afternoon's most exciting match, Yeam won a tight match tie-break at No. 1 singles after letting a 6-3, 4-1 lead slip away. Yeam dropped the second set in a tie-break but then dictated play in the decisive third set match tie-break to complete the scoring for CMS.

With a pair of sweeps, CMS improves to 21-3 overall and 4-0 in SCIAC. The Stags next take the court on Thursday in the Sixth Street Rivalry against No.12 Pomona-Pitzer at 6:00 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
