Men's Tennis Advances to Stag-Hen Final with Two Shutouts
CMS Stags Tennis got a pair of shutout victories against two more nationally ranked opponents on Friday to advance to the Stag-Hen championship match. CMS defeated #12 Case Western Reserve 9-0 in the quarterfinals and then shocked top ranked Kenyon 9-0 in the semis. The Stags will take on second ranked Emory on Saturday at 9:30 AM at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
CMS earned their fourth straight doubles sweep against ranked Division III opponents with their dominant doubles play on Friday. The Stags' #2 pair Skyler Butts (Fr. - Santa Ana, CA) and Neel Kotrappa (Jr. Capt - La Verne, CA) won their seventh straight matches, getting CMS' first point against Case Western and then completing the sweep against Kenyon. Butts and Kotrappa came back from a break down at 5-3 to win the last five games against Kenyon.
In the singles, three Stags earned a pair of straight set victories on the day. Sophomore Joe Dorn (Washington D.C.) yielded only nine games in two matches at the #2 singles position. Butts was a 6-0, 6-2 winner in the morning, and then earned the Stags' first singles point of the afternoon with his 6-4, 6-2 win at #5. Senior Mac Cahill (Southport, CT) kept his perfect dual match record intact with two wins at the #6 singles position.
Two of the more notable wins for CMS in the Kenyon match involved sophomores Warren Wood (Del Mar, CA) and Nikolas Marino (San Diego, CA). Wood stayed undefeated against Division III opponents this spring with a third set match tie-break win over Kenyon's Paul Burgin, who is ranked fourth nationally. Wood now has wins over the nation's #1, #3, and #4 ranked players within the last two weeks. Marino battled back from a set down in his match against Kenyon's previously undefeated Wade Heerboth. After winning the second set 6-0 and serving for the match at 5-3 in the third, Marino was unable to put Heerboth away. With the match leveled at 5-all and both players fighting cramps, Marino pulled out a dramatic final two games to complete the shutout for CMS.
The Stag-Hen championship match pairs Emory and CMS for the fourth time in the six-year history of the tournament and third consecutive year. CMS defeated Emory in the inaugural title match in 2007. Emory defeated CMS in the 2011 final. And then in 2012, the two teams were crowned co-champions when rain forced the cancellation of the championship match.
