Stags Advance to SCIAC Final

Top seeded CMS Stags Tennis earned wins over 8th seeded Caltech and 5th seeded Pomona-Pitzer in the opening and semifinal rounds of the SCIAC Tournament in Whittier on Friday. CMS will face 5th ranked Cal Lutheran at 10:00 AM on Saturday at Whittier Narrows in the title match.

Skyler Butts (Fr. - Santa Ana, CA) won three matches on the day to lead all Stags. Butts and partner Neel Kotrappa (Jr. Capt. - La Verne, CA) got two wins, including a pivotal victory to put CMS up 2-1 against Pomona-Pitzer in the semifinal match. Butts returned in singles to get the Stags' fourth point of the afternoon at the #5 position. Butts is now 21-3 on the season in singles, and 22-5 with Kotrappa in doubles.

Alex Lane's (Sr. - Claremont, CA) dual match clinching win at #4 singles was his 21st victory of the spring. Lane and partner Nikolas Marino (So. - San Diego, CA) were responsible for CMS' first point against Pomona-Pitzer, an 8-1 win at #3 doubles. Other two match winners on the day were sophomores Warren Wood (Del Mar, CA) and Joe Dorn (Washington D.C.), who won at #1 doubles against Caltech and at #1 and #2 singles against Pomona-Pitzer. Senior Alex Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA) also collected two wins, partnering Matt Ellis (Mercer Island, WA) for a win at #3 doubles against Caltech, and then returning for a straight set singles win at #6 against Pomona-Pitzer.

With the victories, CMS moves to 25-3 overall and 9-0 in conference play. Tomorrow's SCIAC Tournament championship is a re-match of the April 5th meeting between these two teams, won by CMS at Cal Lutheran by a 6-3 score.
