Loncki wins SCIAC Championships by one stroke; Athenas take second
BEAUMONT, Calif. – For the first time since 2013, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team had the top individual finisher at the SCIAC Golf Championships, the conference's final tournament of the year. Freshman Margaret Loncki (CMC) won the three-round 2015 SCIAC Championships golf tournament by one stroke over Pomona-Pitzer's Tiffany Gu with a score of 227. The top six individual finishers in the tournament were separated by just four shots.
As a team, CMS finished in second place with a score of 936, two shots behind Redlands who won the tournament and the overall conference championship. Redlands ended CMS' three-year run of conference championships.
At the third and final conference tournament of the season held at the par-72 Oak Valley Golf Course from April 26-28, Whittier (957), Pomona-Pitzer (959), Cal Lutheran (992), Occidental (1,072) and La Verne rounded out the team standings behind Redlands and CMS.
Over the course of the three days, CMS improved with each round as a team, shooting a 316 and 315 in the first and second rounds, before scoring a 305 to close out the tournament. The score of 305 was 17-over par for the final round.
Individually, Loncki had the two lowest rounds of the tournament for the Athenas, an even-par, 72 in the first round and a 73 in the final round. She improved by nine strokes from the second round to the final round. Sophomore Taylor Kain-Godoy (CMC) came in ninth place overall and had the second lowest overall score of the tournament for CMS, a 237. One behind Kain-Godoy was Shaina Raskin (SCR) at 11th, followed in 12th by senior Marissa Suehiro (CMC) who had a 242 and sophomore Lindsay Slocum (CMC) in 21st at 250.
CMS is now waiting to hear if they will get a berth in the NCAA Division III National Championships which are May 12-15 in Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla.
