SCIAC Track & Field Championships Preview

CLAREMONT, Calif. –  The SCIAC Track & Field Championships take place this weekend at Occidental College.  The meet should be a close three-team battle in both the men's and women's competitions.  Redlands is the favorite on the men's side with CMS and La Verne also vying for the win while Cal Lutheran is the favorite in the women's competition with CMS and La Verne again battling for the win.

The meet begins Friday at 12:00 pm.  The first day of competition features preliminary races in seven running events and finals in eight field events (women's hammer, men's javelin, women's discus, men's shot put, men's and women's long jump and men's and women's pole vault) and two running events (men's and women's steeplechase).  The meet continues on Saturday with events beginning at 1:00 pm.  The second day of competition features finals in eight field events (men's hammer, women's javelin, women's shot put, men's discus, men's and women's high jump and men's and women's triple jump) along with finals in 10 running events.

The conference champion is decided by results of the dual meets and placing at the conference championships.  Teams earn one point for each dual meet win and points at the championships are awarded nine for first, eight for second, seven for third, ...  The Stags are 6-1 heading into the championship meet while the Athenas are 6-2.  Last season, the Stags won their 20th conference title while the Athenas finished tied for second.

CMS has several athletes who are seeded first in their event including Hanna Tarleton in the women's 400, Evan Molineux in the men's 1500 and steeplechase, Allison Barnwell in the women's steeplechase, Matt Wong in the men's long jump, Ellyn Erving in the women's triple jump and Alex Rich in the men's hammer.  Defending SCIAC Champions for CMS include Justin Jones in the men's 800, Molineux in the 1500, Matt Espy in the men's 400 hurdles and Barnwell in the steeplechase.
