Men's Tennis Earns Two More Wins Over Ranked Teams

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned a pair of victories over nationally-ranked teams on Saturday, defeating No. 17 Tufts University 7-2 and No. 34 George Fox University 8-1. On the day, the Stags went 11-1 in singles play en route to a pair of comfortable victories. CMS is now a collective 87-15 in singles dual match play thus far this season.

Against the Jumbos in the morning match, junior captain Julian Gordy (CMC) paired with sophomore Nikolai Parodi (CMC) for a win at No. 1 doubles, then earned the Stags' most convincing singles win at No. 4 to clinch the victory over Tufts. Gordy has now won six of his last seven singles matches and is 2-0 at the No. 4 spot without the loss of a set. Parodi secured CMS' fourth point of the dual with his second consecutive come from behind win against a NESCAC opponent. After dropping the opening set at No. 1 singles, Parodi needed just one service break in the second set, and got two breaks in the deciding set to earn the win. Parodi was the only Stag to play singles and doubles in both dual matches on Saturday. Against George Fox, he and Gordy lost their first regional match of the season at No. 1 doubles, but then rebounded for a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.

Senior Patrick Wildman (CMC) made his 2018 singles debut against George Fox. Wildman was a straight set winner at No. 6 singles, which put CMS up 7-1. Sophomores Matthew Jacobs (CMC), Jay Yeam (CMC), and Jake Berber (CMC) all looked impressive at Nos. 2-4 singles, as none lost more than two games. Yeam and Berber remain perfect in singles play this spring, having each won four matches. Jacobs won his second straight match, and has now played at every singles position except for No. 4 for CMS this spring.

The two victories improves the Stags to 15-2 on the season. CMS will host the No. 11 Williams Ephs at 5:00 p.m on Tuesday in their next clash against a nationally ranked team.
