Seniors shine as Stags blank No. 12 UC San Diego

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team honored seniors Alex Brenner (CMC), Glenn Hull (CMC), Max Macey (CMC), Daniel Morkovine (CMC), and Rohan Shankar (HMC), and all five contributed to a dominant shutout of Division II No. 12 UC San Diego on Saturday. Hull and Morkovine each had two wins, while Brenner, Macey, and Shankar all contributed in singles. The Stags are now 24-2 overall, with two non-conference matches remaining before the SCIAC tournament begins May 5.

CMS turned in its most impressive doubles outing of the season by sweeping the Tritons. Morkovine and sophomore partner Julian Gordy (CMC) got things started at No. 1 with an 8-4 win. Hull and freshman Jake Berber (CMC) won their seventh of eight matches together, rallying from a service break down to earn the Stags' second point of the afternoon. Freshmen Daniel Park (CMC) and Nikolai Parodi (CMC) consolidated the doubles sweep in dramatic fashion, coming back from 5-1, and then 6-3 and two match points down in the tie-break. CMS is now an impressive 28-15 in tie-breaks this season, and has won its last six.

The Stags were again strong in singles, wasting no time in getting two wins to clinch the dual match. Hull put CMS up 4-0 with his 16th dual match win of the spring. Hull is now 19-1 overall and has not lost a set in singles since March 15. Park clinched in straight sets at No. 5 singles, followed closely by Brenner at No. 6 and Morkovine at No. 3, also in two sets.

After Macey improved to 21-2 on the season to put the Stags up 8-0, only Parodi remained on court. The Stags' No. 1 split the first two sets with only one break of serve deciding each. Parodi earned the only service break he needed in the 11th game of the deciding set, and then served out the match to complete the shutout.

CMS completes regular season dual match play next Wednesday, April 26, traveling to Division II No. 11 Azusa Pacific (19-5) at 1:30 PM. The Stags return home that evening to face NAIA opponent Hope International (3-14, 0-8) at 7 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
