Butts and Morkovine advance at NCAA Championships

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Through the first day of matches (May 26) at the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships (May 26-28), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps has two Stags who have advanced, representing both tournaments.

CMS' top doubles team of junior Daniel Morkovine (San Carlos, CA) and senior captain Skyler Butts (Santa Ana, CA) had a dominant showing in their Round of 16 match against Vayum Arora and Daniel Levine of Carnegie Mellon University. Seeded third out of 16 teams, Butts and Morkovine dropped just one game en route to the 6-0, 6-1 win. The CMS duo next faces Sam Geier and Tristan Kaye in the Division III quarterfinals on May 27 on Kalamazoo's Stowe Courts at 3 p.m. EDT.

In the singles tournament, Butts, the 2015 national runner-up to graduated Stag Warren Wood, won both of his matches to advance to Friday's quarterfinals. Butts, the fourth seed, opened the day with a Round of 32, 6-0, 6-4 win over Jonathan Jemison of Emory University. Then in a more tightly contested match later in the day, Butts advanced by Steven Chen of Wesleyan University, 7-5, 6-4. In the quarterfinals on May 27, Butts takes on Ben Rosen of Bates on Kalamazoo's Stowe Courts at 9 a.m. EDT.

Also in singles on Thursday, junior Glenn Hull (Brookings, OR) started out strong in his first set jumping out to a 6-2 lead in his Round of 32 match-up against third-seeded Rafe Mosetick of Emory. Mosetick won the second and third sets for the 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory of Hull to advance.
